Teaching Textiles
Why am I passionate about textiles?
As a high school student many decades ago, I loved the freedom and possibilities that learning how to create garments gave me. Most teenagers do not have the luxury of buying designer clothes and accessories, but we all want them! Having the knowledge to make something for yourself is a priceless gift. There become endless possibilities; fabrics and textiles are everywhere from haberdashery outlets and secondhand stores, as well as in your own closet by repurposing old items.
Sustainability
It is easy to ignore important matters relating to the future. Instead, we need to choose to embrace these matters and keep them in our hearts so we can approach them with passion and vigour. Some great individuals and organisations are forging a positive path to a sustainable future. The textiles industry snowballs with 'fast fashion' constant. A majority of us are slaves to consumerism. If we could all try being a little creative with our clothes and other home textiles, we could make a difference while having fun. Textiles are fun!
With some research, it is easy to find great fashion labels that use all or primarily recycled fabrics. These companies find ways to reuse fabrics and recyclable materials such as plastic bottles to make gorgeous new fashion instead of ending up in a landfill.
